Winnetonka High School

Winnetonka High School is the proud home of the Griffins — a community of scholars committed to academic excellence, service and preparing for the future.

The school serves approximately 1,200 students in grades 9 through 12 from surrounding Northland neighborhoods. Winnetonka is the feeder high school for Maple Park Middle School, Eastgate 6th Grade Center and five elementary schools: Gracemor, Greenway, Maplewood, Ravenwood, and Topping.

Winnetonka has a rich and storied history, with generations of alumni who continue to return, reconnect and cheer on their alma mater. The Griffin community is known for its pride, tradition and commitment to supporting students as they grow into leaders, learners and changemakers.

Winnetonka is also the only AVID National Demonstration School in Missouri. AVID is a schoolwide approach to college readiness that helps students build strong study habits, academic skills and post-secondary goals. Winnetonka students bring a wide range of strengths, talents and interests, and the school is proud to support each student as they prepare for life after high school.

Mascot

The Griffin is a legendary creature of old Greek mythology which portrays the combined features of a being with the head, talons, and wings of an eagle, the body of a lion, and a feathered back. The animal-like ears are usually shown in the forward position denoting alertness and acute hearing. Griffins sat at the feet of Apollo, held a paw on the zodiac and emitted light. The Griffin was generally believed to be a ferocious monster of enormous size - so large that drinking cups could be made from its claws. Griffins are considered to be symbols of strength and vigilance. In classic mythology Griffins were guardians of gold and godly treasures. They built their nests from gold which made their nests very tempting to hunters. Griffins were then forced to keep vigilant guard over their nests. Therefore, the Griffin is usually associated with acting as a guardian of treasures or of something to be valued.
